Your messages with Signal are end-to-end encrypted which is like having locks and keys for each message. When the safety number changes it’s as if you have changed the locks and keys for your messages. So, messages that were sent before the safety number change are using the old locks and will not be delivered.

You can use Signal on your desktop as well! Before jumping in, think about whether Signal for desktop works for your situation. If you’re having highly sensitive conversations and think you may have malicious software on your personal computer, you probably don’t want to feed your encrypted messages into that infected machine. For example, if you’re infected with malicious software designed to log your keystrokes or send screenshots to a remote attacker, encryption won’t protect your messages. If it makes sense for you, try Signal for your desktop, If you want to delete a specific message, press and hold the message. When the menu pops up, press “Delete.” Because Signal stores all of your messages locally and not on a remote server, you are only deleting the message on your personal device. The best defense is to always install new software updates for Signal and your device itself. These updates usually contain valuable security patches; get them as soon as possible. If your phone is ever lost or stolen, thieves can copy and read data off the device, including your encrypted messages. Luckily it’s pretty easy to protect your device with disk encryption. Want to confirm you’re talking to the right person on Signal? Use the Safety Number feature to verify a contact’s identity. Signal protects all one-on-one and group chats with end-to-end encryption by default. But you still might be vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. To stay safe, here’s how to verify a Signal contact’s identity using a 60-digit safety number. Each contact in Signal has their own unique security code.

• This is a long, 60-digit numeric code.
• If you want to verify the end-to-end encryption between you and the contact, all you have to do is match these two pairs of 60-digit codes.
• But that can be quite a lot, so you can use a QR code to verify as well.
• The safety number changes when your contact changes their phone number or reinstalls the Signal app.

If the safety number keeps changing frequently, it might be a sign that something is wrong. It could be a man-in-the-middle attack or someone else using the contact’s account. This is why Signal recommends that you check and verify the safety number periodically, especially when you’re sharing sensitive information with a contact. Now, choose the “View Safety Number” option. You will see a QR Code at the top of the screen and a 60-digit numeric Safety number at the bottom. This is your Safety Code for the contact. You’ll need to ask your contact to share their number. To share your safety number with them, tap the share icon. The icon will look slightly different on Android. Here, choose the “Copy” button. From there, paste the number into the text field for the contact and tap the send button. If the two safety numbers match, you’re golden. If you don’t want to manually compare the 60-digit code, you can also use the QR code. This can be done easily if both devices are in the same place. From the “Verify Safety Number” screen, simply tap the QR code. Now ask the contact to display their Safety Number QR code. Once the QR code is scanned using your phone’s camera, Signal will tell you if the code matches. If it does, you can choose to mark the contact as verified using the “Mark as Verified” option. This will make it easier for you to know when end-to-end encryption is safe and enabled for a contact. You can repeat this process for other contacts. Signal has now given more controls to users which WhatsApp does not have yet. Signal in its blog had warned users about sharing disappearing media with adversaries. “This is not for situations where your contact is your adversary — after all, if someone who receives a disappearing message really wants a record of it, they can always use another camera to take a photo of the screen before the message disappears,” the company said.

In the latest version of our apps, we’re introducing Signal PINs. Signal PINs are based on Secure Value Recovery, which we previewed in December, to allow supporting data like your profile, settings, and who you’ve blocked to be securely recovered should you lose or switch devices.
