The current India-spec Hyundai Creta only has a three-star global NCAP safety rating – The Indonesia-spec Hyundai Creta was recently crash-tested at the ASEAN NCAP and it came out with a solid five-star safety rating. The India-spec model is due for an update and the 2023 Creta, when it arrives, could be similar to the current Indonesia-spec model.

It is still not clear whether the facelifted model for India will get a better rating than the current iteration which received a three-star Global NCAP safety rating. The base-spec ‘Active’ variant that was tested by ASEAN NCAP comes with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), brake assistant system (BAS), vehicle stability management (VSM), and hill-start assist control (HAC).

Its top-spec variants also offer ADAS including lane-keep assist, blind spot detection, driver attention warning and more.

The Creta SUV tested by the ASEAN NCAP was equipped with standard 6 airbags, as well as other safety features like Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR), ISOFIX and Pedestrian Protection technology. The new Creta will offer enhanced safety technology, which includes ADAS features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) City, Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) for both sides as well as Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA).

In April, the India-spec Creta underwent crash test at the Global NCAP. It returned with a moderate three-star rating. During the test in April, Creta had scored 8 points out of 17 in the adult occupant protection category, while in the child occupant category it received 28.29 points out of 49.

The test report had also revealed that the bodyshell integrity of the popular SUV was proven unstable during the crash test. This SUV was equipped with safety features such as front seatbelt pre-tensioners, SBR, and four-channel ABS among others. Hyundai is expected to drive in the new generation Creta SUV later next year.

It has already been introduced in global markets with new looks and enhanced features.   • The refinement isn’t in just how smooth it sounds and feels, but also in the smooth way that the torque is delivered, which just adds to a gentle, calming driving experience.
  • Calm and gentle are what the Creta excels at and it breathes down a smooth road in a likeable manner.

The ride comfort is mostly good, but its suspension still can’t eat through big potholes as effortlessly as a Renault Duster or Nissan Kicks. Our usually skittish cat enjoyed the drive. Age and exposure to fast motorcycles have convinced me that driving the average car in an aggressive manner is absolutely pointless. Why is Creta not NCAP tested?

Hyundai Creta is one of the most popular SUVs in India. The SUV is well-known for its comfort and design features. The latest Global NCAP crash tests results on Creta have now shown where the SUV stands in terms of safety. The car managed to get a 3-star rating on the test.

It is to be noted that the base E variant of the Creta was used for the crash test, and it comes without certain safety measures like side and curtain airbags. The Creta was tested with a frontal offset crash test at a speed of 64km/h. As per the Global NCAP report, the SUV’s body is ‘unstable’ and not capable of ‘withstanding further loadings.

In addition, the test rated the footrest of the car as unstable. It is to be noted that Creta scored 8 points out of 17 points for adult protection. Furthermore, Global NCAP says that the driver’s head was recorded as ‘adequate’, whereas for the passenger, it was ‘good’.

Moreover, both the driver and co-driver dummies were recorded as having ‘good’ protection for the neck. However, the chest protection data was marginal for the driver and ‘good’ for the co-driver. The Hyundai Creta also received a 3-star rating for child occupant protection, scoring 28.29 out of a possible 49 points. The segment-leading Hyundai Creta compact SUV and its sibling – the pricey and well-loaded Hyundai i20 hatch – have scored 3 stars for adult occupant protection from Global NCAP in the latest round of Safer Cars for India crash tests. The Hyundai Creta has just barely made it to the 3 Star mark, much like its platform-sharing cousin the Kia Seltos had in a similar test conducted in 2020. The Hyundai Creta’s recorded an unstable structure with the risk of injuring the driver’s lower legs and feet Yet, the Creta’s body shell has been rated unstable, with a higher risk of likely injury to the legs and feet of the front passengers. Its lack of standard safety equipment like ISOFIX child seat anchorages, 3-point seatbelts, and ESC (electronic stability control) for all passengers, also pulled down its scores. The i20’s crash test results showed an unstable structure on the premium hatchback with a risk of the driver airbag not protecting the driver’s head completely The Hyundai i20 was also tested in its base variant – with dual airbags and ABS. It too has shown an unstable structure, and worryingly also exhibits a risk of the driver side airbag not completely protecting the driver’s head and chest.

The Hyundai i20 did score a bit better on child safety with 36.89 /49 points – but it has also meant only a 3 Star rating for child occupant protection. This rating holds only if the appropriate car seats are used for child passengers. The i20 does get ISOFIX anchorages but Global NCAP is again disappointed that the i20 has a lap belt for the middle rear passenger, and three-point seatbelts are not standard.

The i20 also doesn’t have ESC or side head impact protection as standard – unlike the European spec Hyundai i20 that gets all that, multiple airbags, and even autonomous emergency braking as standard. The i20 does get ISOFIX anchorages but Global NCAP is again disappointed that the i20 has a lap belt for the middle rear passenger, and three-point seatbelts are not standard Alejandro Furas, Secretary General, Global NCAP said, “Although the overall star rating of these models might seem reasonable, the continued reluctance of manufacturers like Hyundai to equip safety systems such as ESC and side body and head protection airbags as a basic requirement in India is disappointing.” Queries on both crash tests sent by carandbike to Hyundai India have as yet gone unanswered.

Global NCAP has welcomed the Indian government’s plan to increase side impact protection requirements in passenger cars. In fact, as reported by carandbike late last year, the Safer Cars for India testing protocol from Global NCAP will be updated from July 2022, to include side-impact, ESC, and pedestrian protection.

Global NCAP’s current protocol only tests frontal crash protection for occupants. The test protocol becoming more stringent will no doubt mean that it will be even tougher for made in India cars to get the coveted 5 Star rating. Then it also gets more safety features like ESC, vehicle stability management (VSM), hill-assist control (HAC), and ISOFIX child-seat mounts.

Hence, the Exter could be the safest small SUV in its class after it is tested by GNCAP or Bharat NCAP.
