In which areas do we find warning signs out of laboratory?
20. General Warning – The general warning lab safety symbol consists of a black exclamation point in a yellow triangle. As you’d expect, it is a general warning to laboratory staff that a hazard exists. This symbol can be found on equipment, doorways, cupboards or other areas of the lab.
Where should safety signs be posted?
Safety sign locations Responding is Jude Carter, vice president, marketing,, Wallingford, CT. Safety signage is a critical element in creating a safe environment for employees. Many factors influence the effectiveness of signs: size, visibility, clarity of message, color, visual treatment, readability and, of course, location.
- Typically, safety signs are located near machinery, production equipment, warehouse areas, front offices, and entrances and exits.
- Many companies in manufacturing and warehouse distribution are choosing digital signage to raise awareness of safety throughout large facilities, where most workers aren’t at desks and don’t have access to computers.
These electronic message boards offer a visual communication channel that can be very effective at engaging employees and reinforcing important safety protocol. Location of digital signage has a direct impact on its effectiveness. Here are five things to consider:
Your objective determines everything. Why are you installing digital signage? Is your goal to raise awareness of safety across the entire workforce? Is it to drive performance or improve quality in the factory? Consider the people you need to reach, what they need to know and where they are located. This will help you decide how many screens you need, where to put them and what content to post. Digital signage is not the same as a bulletin board. Companies often think of digital signage as a replacement for bulletin boards. They are looking for a more dynamic way to engage and inform employees. Bulletin boards are typically located in hallways where employees pass through on their way to somewhere else. To maximize the impact of your digital signage, get it out of the hallway and into those areas where employees congregate, such as break rooms and near time clocks and elevators. Workers will be more likely to take a moment to notice what’s displayed, and it’ll spark conversation with others. Make sure you have adequate coverage. Safety messages need continual reinforcement. Give your employees multiple opportunities to see dynamic messages on screens throughout your facility. If your objective is to raise safety awareness companywide, be sure to have screens in all major break rooms. If your focus is on reducing incidents in the warehouse, you’ll want to install separate screens in highly visible locations so you can reinforce forklift safety, proper use of personal protective equipment and load balancing. Consider employee foot traffic and work patterns. Once you understand your goal and your audience, do a walk-through in your facility and make sure you choose installation sites that will give your signage maximum exposure. If you have employees in an office, plant and warehouse, their work habits and patterns for taking breaks will vary considerably. Ask: Are your screens visible? Most digital signage screens offer the opportunity to display multiple messages simultaneously in different sections of the screen. This increases the chances of capturing your employees’ attention. When deciding on location, consider readability and visibility. If your electronic message board is installed in the cafeteria, but way up near the ceiling, chances are many workers won’t be able to read it.
Digital safety signage can be a great tool for improving safety awareness at your facility. For maximum success, ensure your screens are located in the right places. : Safety sign locations
What is signage in the workplace?
The purpose of having safety signage in the workplace is to identify and warn workers/visitors who may be exposed to potential hazards in the workplace. Signs can assist in the communication of important instructions, reinforce safety messages and provide instructions for emergency situations.
The health and safety legislation means that all workplaces are obliged to use signs where practical to highlight a serious hazard or risk in the workplace. Safety signs contain instructions that all people on site need to follow and comply with. Failure to comply with any safety signage constitutes either an offence at law, or is a breach of safety procedures or other directions the work site/place has instructed.
Regulatory signs include:
Prohibition signs | Signs that indicate that an action or activity is not permitted. The sign is shown as a red circle with a red slash over a black icon over the action. Test is black on a white background. |
Mandatory signs | Signs that indicate that an instruction must be carried out. The icons are in white reversed out of a blue circle. Text is black on a white background. |
Danger signs | Signs that warn a particular hazard or hazardous condition is likely to be life-threatening. The sign is shown as a word Danger on a red oval over a black rectangle. Text is black on a white background. |
Warning signs | Safety signs that warn of a hazard or hazardous condition that is not likely to be life threatening. The safety sign consists of a black triangle and icon on a yellow background with supporting black text is required. |
Fire safety signs | Fire safety signs advise the location of fire alarms and firefighting equipment. They contain white symbols and/or text on a red background. |
Emergency signs | Safety signs that indicate the location of, or directions to emergency facilities. These signs feature a white symbol and/or text on a green background. |
General information signs | These signs communicate information of a general nature and often refer to housekeeping, company practices or logistics. These signs are not referred to in AS 1319:1994. |
Why do we use safety signs in the workplace?
Legal requirements – One of the most simplest explanations for the importance of safety signs is that they are a legal requirement for any workplace, and installing them therefore represents a key element of basic regulatory compliance. The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 mandate that signs are required where significant risks to the health and safety of employees and others continue to exist even after all other relevant precautions have been taken.
To warn against dangerous and prohibited actions in a certain area To highlight safeguards and procedures that must be followed, or equipment that must be worn To draw attention to a nearby hazard or potentially dangerous situation To direct people towards essential safety gear and fire safety equipment
If companies fail to meet their legal requirements and something does go wrong, they could be at risk of regulatory fines and severe damage to their reputation, which is why no responsible business should ever underestimate the importance of investing in essential signage.
Where and how should hazard warning markings be placed?
Fixed Extinguishing Systems – Hazard warning or caution signs must be posted at the entrance to, and inside of, areas protected by fixed extinguishing systems which use agents in concentrations known to be hazardous to employee safety and health.
What are safety signs or safety labels?
Purpose of Signs: Safety signs provide important specific safety information from warning of dangers, providing instructions and types of personal protective equipment needed. Signs also warn of areas that require special authorization for entry such as confined spaces and service utility areas.
Why do we need signs on site?
From office buildings to construction sites and manufacturing plants, signs are all around to promote workplace safety. As instant recognizable indicators of potential hazards, safety signs can greatly reduce accidents, injuries, and possible death. Signs are also a useful tool in providing everyday general information, education, and direction to your busy workforce.
- Danger signs
- Caution signs
- General safety information signs
According to OSHA, improper hazard communications standards or lack of safety signage is the #2 most-cited workplace violation and third most prevalent reason for workplace injuries. “As indicators of potential hazards, safety signs can greatly reduce accidents, injuries, and possible death.” What is the Importance of Safety Signs in the Workplace?
-
- Prevents Accidents and Injuries First and foremost, safety signage reduces the likelihood of workplace injuries and accidents. Every year, there are about 2.8 million nonfatal workplace accidents or injuries in the United States each year. Many of these cases are preventable by reinforcing proper safety communication and signage. Employees are more alert to workplace hazards and can respond promptly and appropriately when incidents do occur, reducing injuries like slips, falls, struck-by-objects, and electrocution. ‘There are about 2.8 million nonfatal workplace accidents and injuries reported in the United States each year.’
- Compliance Safety signs help ensure compliance with OSHA standards and requirements. In fact, penalties can be passed down to businesses who fail to comply with regulatory safety signage requirements. OSHA 1926.200(a) states that proper signage must be visible at all times when work is being performed in at-risk areas.
- Integrity The number one responsibility of your operation is the health and safety of your workforce. Safety signs protect employees and support a safe, secure work environment. By staying up-to-date and compliant with OSHA signage standards, your operation demonstrates its value, respect, and commitment to every employee.
- Security A safety sign’s main function is to keep employees safe, but signs are also used to enforce security. Admittance signs clearly designate a prohibited area in a work environment to unauthorized personnel and help deter any type of theft as well.
- Employee and Visitor Education Safety signs are effectively used for educational purposes, especially within a manufacturing or engineering environment where dangers are prevalent. In the event of a crisis, ensuring employees are guided appropriately is critical. Also, new employees are often introduced to corporate safety practices through signage, so signs must be concise and clearly communicate the required information.
Important Types of Safety Signs to Have in Your Workplace As we mentioned, OSHA lists three classifications of safety signs, yet there are a few other important workplace indicators to address. Let’s talk more about these signs and why they are so crucial to the overall safety of your workforce.
-
- Danger Signs
‘High voltage’, dangerous chemicals’, ‘radiation’ – these are all examples of danger signs. Danger signs are the most serious safety sign types defined by OSHA. Danger signs are to be displayed in areas where immediate hazards and risk are (or may be) present. These signs have a distinct shape, color scheme, and have the word “Danger” printed within a red rectangle on the top of the sign.
-
- Caution Signs
Caution signs is the second OSHA-official sign category. This sign type is an accident prevention tag, indicating situations that may result in minor to moderate injuries. There are two main design rules that signify caution signs. First, caution signs should contain the command word “Caution” in all-caps with all-black text.
-
- General Safety Signs
The third type of OSHA safety sign category is general safety. General safety signs serve as a reminder of workplace safety rules, best practices, and can direct employees to emergency equipment if needed. General safety signs use text and pictograms printed in either green or black on a plain white background or white on a green background.
-
-
- First aid kits
- Sanitation stations
- Emergency phones
- Safety apparel required
-
Several smaller categories of safety signs include:
-
- Safety Instruction Signs
Safety instruction signs inform workers about workplace safety policies and procedures. This may include shutdown instructions, hygiene practices, or how to operate certain types of equipment. How can you recognize these signs? You can identify a safety instruction sign by the white background with a green upper panel and white lettering.
-
- Admittance Signs
Admittance signs detail who can and cannot enter a certain designated area. These signs clearly stand out and use phrases such as ‘do not enter’, ‘no trespassing’, ‘authorized personnel only’, or similar messaging.
-
- Fire Safety Signs
Fire safety signs identify areas of mandatory fire precaution or prohibition. Fire safety signs have white lettering and fire graphics on a bright red background. There are two types of compliant fire signage: 1: Prohibitory fire signs: These are specific prohibition signs stating that no open flames are allowed.2: Emergency fire fighting equipment: These signs designate where fire fighting equipment is stored, such as fire extinguishers, blankets, smoke masks, and hoses.
-
- Non-Hazard Signs
Non-hazard signs include workplace traffic signs and safety area directional information. These signs communicate general safety messages such as the nearest exits points and fire assembly points. What is a signage example?
What is Signage? – Signage is any kind of visual display used to convey information. For example, informational business signs can help people make decisions, know how to act, or provide advice. Other types of influential signage can contain marketing information to encourage the reader about the benefits of a product or service.
- Business signs are often the first interaction that a potential customer has with a company.
- For example, external business signs or storefront signage usually represent the brand image.
- There could also be signage with the intent to entice consumers into the store.
- Most types of retail premises have a wall sign or a pole sign.
Business Sign can also use various forms of media to communicate with consumers. Types of signage can include monument signs, wayfinding signs, pole signs, and A-frame sidewalk boards. Digital signage is the newest form of displaying information. It can include LCD screens, giant LED billboards or electronic paper displays.
What is an example of information signage?
We’ve recently being doing some information signs for Perth Airport to upgrade their escalator signage. Whilst obviously a serious public service message, the reference to ‘Caution if wearing Crocs’ made me chuckle. Only in Australia would there be signs relating to ‘Crocs’ footwear.
Whatever next? Thongs too maybe! We make hundreds of general information signs every year so it’s fair to see one every now and then that’s a bit out of the ordinary. Typically, information signage is a clear, legible and noticeable sign that informs people or gives them instructions. Examples include traffic signs such as a stop sign, an A-frame with safety information or a hazard sign on a chemical bin.
Information signs can be large or small, made of any type of material and be mounted onto walls, posts or free-standing. There are literally thousands of different applications and sign types. Whilst information signs have a serious purpose, and can be widely used to advise people Warnings, Caution, Danger etc, they come in many shapes and sizes.
They may also be made in the form of a Statutory Sign – often needed for compliance in public environments and for building regulations. As such Statutory Signs are required by law and identify compulsory building services such as fire, emergency exits and amenities. Braille and tactile signs, for people who are blind or have low vision, also fall within this category.

What color are safety signs?
Not only are safety signs required by law, but they are also used to convey threats and can serve as a reminder to follow certain instructions, such as using personal protective equipment (PPE), Each type of safety sign has a different colour which is standardised according to the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996,
What are some situations where warning signs might be used?
4. What are five situations where warning signs might be used? Warning signs might be used to indicate any number of hazards; no passing zones, railroad crossings, school zones, sharp curves, intersections ahead, or animal crossings.
How do you identify warning signs?
Yellow / Amber signs are warning signs, meaning to be careful, take precautions or examine. Blue safety signs mean that a sign is mandatory and that specific behaviour or action should be carried out, such as wearing protective equipment. Green signs signal an emergency escape or first-aid available.
What is the purpose of warning signs and where should they be displayed?
Caution signs – Laboratories, shops and maker spaces where hazardous materials are used or stored are required to post an up-to-date caution sign at the entrance. A caution sign is required to be posted in a Plexiglas holder above or near the room number placard at each entrance that has a door or barrier.
The purpose of the sign is to warn emergency responders and visitors of potential hazards in the space and to meet multiple regulatory requirements. The caution sign consolidates signage requirements for National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 704 Hazardous Materials, biohazardous and radioactive materials authorization, entry requirements, food and drink prohibitions and lab contact information.
Hazards listed for that location include all items inventoried in MyChem, the University’s chemical inventory database. The signs are printed out and updated by personnel using the Caution Sign page in MyChem, It is the responsibility of personnel (responsible party, supervisor, manager, etc.) to update the signs if significant changes occur in chemical inventories, entry requirements, hazardous materials authorizations or contacts.
Occupants replace signs as needed by updating their MyChem inventory and using the Caution Signs page available in the MyChem menu to print a new sign. You must have an account in the MyChem chemical inventory system to create or edit a sign based on the chemical inventory in your laboratory, shop or maker space. After logging into MyChem, click on the Caution Sign menu item and select the building and room (or suite) to create a customized sign for your location.
Sign holders are provided by EH&S and available upon request by emailing [email protected], In addition to the chemical hazards listed under the NFPA diamond, hazards identified on caution signs with pictograms include:
Biohazards Compressed gases Cryogens Lead Radioactive materials
Use the Caution Signs Instructions to create and post your caution sign, including:
There are two kinds of caution signs – Room Signs and Suite Signs For areas or rooms with multiple entrances – caution signs must be posted at each entrance and show the same information. Look for rooms within a room or rooms accessible only from another room. A collection of rooms like this is considered to be a suite and needs a Suite Sign posted at each main/primary entrance, with Room Signs posted at the entrances of the inner rooms. Within a suite, only rooms that have a door and are used as lab spaces need a Room Sign. Any rooms which are not used for chemical or wet lab work but are still lab spaces (procedure room, microscope room, autoclave room, etc.) should have a caution sign, even if the chemical diamond shows only zeros and no PPE is required. Alcove spaces, open benches, and corridors within a suite that are identified with a room number do not get their own Room Sign. Their inventories are combined into and reflected on the Suite Sign for the suite they are part of via the Caution Sign Tool. All labs that have spaces/alcoves/corridors/inner rooms which are part of a suite must identify each space/alcove/corridor/inner room by room number on the Suite Sign for that suite. Suites within a suite will not be listed on the same caution signs.
Note: All chemicals, compressed gases, and compressed air tanks should be listed in MyChem under the room number that corresponds with their exact location, regardless if that room has its own caution sign. This applies to chemicals and compressed gas tanks located in rooms without doors, alcoves, open benches, and corridors.
In what shape are warning signs usually displayed?
Warning signs – Warning signs feature a triangular border and are yellow in colour. They are designed to draw workers’ attention to a specific hazard or dangerous situation in the nearby area. Rather than prohibiting a specific action, warning signs are designed to remind the reader to exercise precaution due to the presence of the hazard it depicts. When you see a yellow warning sign, you should take extra care to ensure you are able to avoid the nearby hazard.
